Get Learning Ignite is an interactive learning application for high school students.
Working with teenagers means that protecting their privacy is a top priority. So we offer the best possible security: we don't take any personal data.
That means we don't have to protect what we haven't taken!
What about advertising? It's invasive and distracting, so we've chosen to use no advertising in our applications.
How about access? We want this app to get used where it is needed most, so it's free to use!
First, why do we store information? It's simple: to continue improving our content, so it helps students with their learning.
Whatever information we do store is anonymous: no logins, no email, no phone numbers, no names or demographic information.
We store anonymous usage information to see how learners are using our app. That way we can figure out what works, what doesn't, and where we can make improvements. Currently we store:
The application covers concepts like Growth Mindsets, and then asks users to write about their own lives, and how these ideas could affect them. By choosing to participate like this, learners have the opportunity to write these new ideas into their lives. This is an important part of how this app works.
The extent to which users write about their lives is totally voluntary. There is no assessment of what they write; it is for their benefit. While they are working, their writing is stored temporarily on their phone, NOT IN OUR DATABASE.
At the end of the session, they are asked if they want to share their writing with us, to help us understand their thinking and continue to improve the application:
No. We do not share access to our database. We do not give copies of data to other parties.
We are collaborating with psychology researchers from the University of Cape Town, to gauge the effectiveness of Ignite, and look at its application in classrooms. These researchers do not have direct access to our database. They will however participate in a collaborative read-through of writing that has been shared, to see how users responded.
Again, whatever writing has been shared will be saved anonymously to our database, and cannot be linked to individuals.
We welcome this collaboration as it:
